Will Sheff, the frontman and main songwriter for indie rock group Okkervil River, said of his band’s upcoming album I Am Very Far that he wanted to be “not accessible [and not] crowd-pleasing . . . [to] follow what I thought was interesting.” This may be off-putting to fans of the band’s earlier work and pop-oriented, inherently catchy melodies, but if this and other tracks are any indication, this may be Sheff’s best lyrical work to date. And “Your Past Life as a Blast” is just as full and lush sounding as the band’s previous work. I Am Very Far comes out May 10.
