The Dear Hunter – Misplaced Devotion
Casey Crescenzo and his band the Dear Hunter like telling stories; up until now, the band’s output had been entirely focused on telling the story of the band’s namesake. But with The Color Spectrum compilation, Crescenzo (formerly of Rhode Island post-hardcore band The Receiving End of Sirens) has outdone himself with a 9 EP set composed of 36 tracks in total, each EP representing one of nine colors. It’s a mammoth task, and obviously not without flaws – some of the EPs are more failed experiment than truly successful songwriting (Black in particular does nothing for me), but as a whole the project is quite impressive. It’s a bit difficult to listen to 36 tracks in depth, but after many repetitions the power-pop of Yellow and the alt-country/folk of Green stand out. “Misplaced Devotion,” which closes Yellow, has one of the best hooks on the whole collection. Check the whole thing out if you have a chance and a few hours to kill.
