Justice – Newlands

Justice’s long anticipated sophomore album Audio, Video, Disco comes out later this month, and if “Newlands” is any indication fans are in for quite the change-up. The tune starts out with a “Won’t Get Fooled Again”-esque sample before evolving into full-on arena rock power mode. It’s a far cry from the grimy electro of Cross, but it’s also not necessarily terrible – it sort of reminds me of Bibio’s ”Take Off Your Shirt” from this year’s Mind Bokeh in that it effectively trades in one genre for a totally unrelated one. It’s an interesting homage to classic rock, but I’m not sure if a whole album of this is what Justice fans have been expecting. Then again, that “disco” in the title might be more telling that we originally thought.

I see that the disco-electronic sound is trying to make a come back here. A little airy for my taste, but I can see this catching ‘a wave’ in the near future.
